About this listen

In mid-nineteenth-century Ireland, charming Kathleen and dashing Michael harbor secrets and dreams. Imagining a life beyond the kitchen and fields of the wealthy family they both work for, they plot to leave their homeland, marry, and raise the child Kathleen is secretly carrying. The luck of the Irish, however, is not on their side.

Soon, they find themselves swept up in circumstances they never could have fathomed. Kathleen is forced to marry against her will and immigrate to New Zealand. Michael is imprisoned for rebellion and exiled to Australia. As time passes and their new lives march on, they long for those stolen moments in the lush green fields of their native land. And they both still dream of escape, with no idea of how close fate will eventually bring them.

this saga was glorious in its scope. the characters complexity kept the interest to the end.. However the readers inability to properly pronounce Moari grated with this Kiwi listener.

great story. only one disppointment

This is a rather long book, but so beautifully written that one really feels they are able to know the characters and their surroundings. Many twists and turns, and yet the ending seemed to make sense.... don't want to give a spoiler here. It is the story of settlers in Australia and New Zealand, but mostly I felt it was about women's lack of rights in the mid 1800s and also social class inequities... and how some crumble under this, others are able to rise above it. I found myself rooting for, and against, the characters...they really came to life. A tough read in many spots, but a good story of love won and lost and triumph and failure.

Very good listen... kept me wanting more.

I hated this story to end. The characters & plot were well developed with some surprises along the way. The narration was beautifully done

The complexity of characters and the paths they are follow makes this book Sarah Lark’s best work. This is anything but a predictable romantic novel.

Best work so far
