About this listen

When Travels with Lizbeth was first published in 1993, it was proclaimed an instant classic. Lars Eighner's account of his descent into homelessness and his adventures on the streets has moved, charmed, and amused generations of readers and listeners. As Lars wrote, "When I began writing this account I was living under a shower curtain in a stand of bamboo in a public park. I did not undertake to write about homelessness, but wrote what I knew, as an artist paints a still life, not because he is especially fond of fruit, but because the subject is readily at hand."

Containing the widely anthologized essay "On Dumpster Diving", Travels with Lizbeth is a beautifully written account of one man's experience of homelessness, a story of physical survival, and the triumph of the artistic spirit in the face of enormous adversity. In his unique voice - dry, disciplined, poignant, comic - Eighner celebrates the companionship of his dog, Lizbeth, and recounts their ongoing struggle to survive on the streets of Austin, Texas, and hitchhiking along the highways to Southern California and back.

Read it for my English 101 class

This book topic and some discussion I would have not normally read because, I was not curious about same sex relationships. I did listen with an open mind as the author discussed his relationship with other men and was thankful he didn't go to far in detail. I can understand with him being a gay man that this was a big part of his life so some parts of the story was necessary. The overall story open my eyes to so many things I did not realize people without roofs over their heads face on a day today. I almost cry at the thought of losing Liz Beth 😢. I'm going to tell my son who is a black man 6 feet tall and only 16 years old until the world makes some changes dress like you have a lawyer on speed dail when out in public. My son has been pick on by the police twice now and was not even driving, he was walking to the store and another time at the laundromat with me. I never been mean to homeless people but I will do better with helping out when I can. Please forgive all my grammar errors I have yet to take English 101 I was just getting a head start on reading this book.

What a journey!

I've wondered what long-term homeless life would be like. This helps to fill in some gaps.
