About this listen

The scream of the modem was the sound of freedom. Now, it's a countdown to a dead line.

Seventeen-year-old Eric is invisible in the real world. But in the electric dark of 1990s dial-up, he is “Zero,” a data hunter who navigates the secret world of Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) like a king. His usual hunts for cracked games and pirated software lead him to an unlisted number—a gateway to a silent, anonymous server that doesn’t want to be found.

Inside, he discovers a digital graveyard: a collection of grainy video files labeled only by number. The first one he watches is a grainy, silent recording of a brutal parking lot kidnapping. He tells himself it’s a hoax, but the cold efficiency of the violence feels terrifyingly real. His curiosity turns to obsession, and he discovers the server is a catalog of crimes, a secret history of violence stored on a ghost in the machine.

When the operators of the node realize they’re being watched, Eric’s hunt becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse. A mysterious message appears on his screen. The phone line, his only connection to this world, fills with static and whispers. Then, a new video file appears: a recording of his own house, filmed from the shadows across the street.

Hunted by a faceless enemy that can manipulate the very wires running into his home, Eric is pushed to the edge. With no one to believe him, he must use his own skills to turn the network against his tormentors. Can he expose the truth of the modem noise before his connection—and his life—are permanently disconnected?
