About this listen

For over 20 years, Dr. William C. Chasey, an academic who had found his niche in the political labyrinth of Capitol Hill, was admired for his insightful political knowledge and skills in representing his prestigious clients. He enjoyed extraordinary access to members of the US Congress, knitting together one of the most powerful networks on the Hill. All that changed when Chasey was hired by a US company to forge communications between Libya and the US Congress.

A trip to Tripoli for discussions with then Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi forever changed his life. Upon his return, his bank accounts were frozen, clients had been strongly discouraged from working with him, and even his close friends had been advised not to associate with him. The CIA, FBI, IRS, and federal judiciary conspired to coerce him into using his unique Libyan access to participate in a CIA-sponsored assassination plot against the two Libyans indicted for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103. Chasey's refusal to cooperate with the CIA resulted in a six-year FBI investigation and sting operation, financial ruin, criminal charges, and incarceration in federal prison.

Shocking and compelling reading

This book was extremely difficult to switch off. It is two stories in one – an account of unimaginable treachery which ruined the life of a decent citizen because he refused to be silenced or to compromise, and the courage and integrity with which he and his wife stood up to every adversity and eventually triumphed. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the Lockerbie tragedy, and the machinations which can be set in play for nefarious political ends. It is also a study in personal friendship and rats deserting a sinking ship, proving the old adage, ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’. Roy Wells is the perfect narrator, it could have been William Chasey himself telling the story. Wells expertly portrays an elderly gentleman thoughtfully recounting a genuinely amazing personal story, all the while conveying the incredulity, disappointment, frustration and even (rarely) hatred, which he felt as his career and reputation were systematically and ruthlessly destroyed. A truly shocking tale, an inspirational author, and a masterly narration.
