About this listen

This book provides a pragmatic guide laced with humor for individuals considering or already embarked a career in biomedical research. Jonathan Yewdell has spent his entire career as a basic biomedical researcher passionately pursuing the truth. After graduating from Princeton University as a biochemistry major in1975, he trained at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving MD and PhD degrees in 1981, and then worked as a post-doc for a year at Imperial College in London. He has been a principal investigator since 1983: four years as an Assistant Professor at the Wistar Institute and since as a Senior Investigator the National Institutes of Health, creatively combining his interests in virology, immunology and cell biology. He has trained over 50 post-doctoral fellows and published over 300 papers (Google Scholar h-factor currently 93). Dr. Yewdell has been a strident advocate for the interests of young biomedical researchers, and has played a role in improving their working conditions and in reforming the NIH grant system. In Part I of this book he uses his own experience to provide insights and advice in climbing the career ladder. Part II provides nitty gritty advice for aspiring scientists (high school and college students), PhD students, post-docs, and starting principal investigators. Although parts of the book will be tough sledding, friends and family members of young scientists will gain an understanding of their present and future career by reading the book.
