Publisher's summary

Tune In is the first volume of All These Years - a highly-anticipated, groundbreaking biographical trilogy by the world's leading Beatles historian. Mark Lewisohn uses his unprecedented archival access and hundreds of new interviews to construct the full story of the lives and work of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

Ten years in the making, Tune In takes the Beatles from before their childhoods through the final hour of 1962 - when, with breakthrough success just days away, they stand on the cusp of a whole new kind of fame and celebrity. They've one hit record ("Love Me Do") behind them and the next ("Please Please Me") primed for release, their first album session is booked, and America is clear on the horizon. This is the lesser-known Beatles story - the pre-Fab years of Liverpool and Hamburg - and in many respects the most absorbing and incredible period of them all. Here is the complete and true account of their family lives, childhoods, teenage years, and their infatuation with American music; here is the riveting narrative of their unforgettable days and nights in the Cavern Club, their laughs, larks, and adventures when they could move about freely, before fame closed in.

For those who've never read a Beatles book before, this is the place to discover the young men behind the icons. For those who think they know John, Paul, George, and Ringo, it's time to press the reset button and tune into the real story, the lasting word.

Critic reviews

“Beyond essential . . . a wildly evocative portrait . . . The saga is clearer and richer here than it’s ever been. Lewisohn writes in novelistic detail and with the obvious conviction that none of the previous Beatles biographies have ever been good enough.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“A radical event and a joy to read . . . Lewisohn’s work stands as a monumental triumph, a challenge not merely to other Beatles biographers but to the discipline of biography itself. If only all important subjects had their Lewisohn.” (Washington Post)

“The biggest, deepest Beatles book ever.”—Rolling Stone “The widest possible angle on an extensive and engrossing group biography built on a well-raked mountain of exacting new research . . . expertly controlled and propelling.” (New York Times)

Amazing research depth

Any additional comments?

This is part one of a trilogy of books (the other two will come out in 2020 and 2028). This part covers the early years, till Dec 1962.

The sheer breadth of this project is mind boggling, and fortunately the quality of the writing and the narrator choice are excellent, and can keep you going for the 44 hours needed to finish it.

I was never a Beatles fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I'm looking forward to 2020 for the second part!

Exceptional, comprehensive

This is a fantastic work of eloquent enthusiasm. The author clearly has a fanaticism about The Beatles that drives both a comprehensive accounting of seemingly every detail, but also has a real gift for writing that makes the story enthralling, if a little overly detailed at times. Having said that, it's painstaking without being tedious. And over the course of the reading I marveled numerous times at how I still felt so interested, so curious to hear more, considering the length and level of detail. Such is the author's gift for story telling. This is truly an exceptional work.

The definitive account of the early days.

Mark L. is THE authority on the Beatles, and with this introductory volume he delivers. The text is delivered superbly with a BBC smoothness punctuated by spot-on renderings of the individual Beatles and their supporting cast. CLICK, CONFIRM AND GIVE IT A LISTEN!!

Phenomenonal!

I’ve been a Beatles fan my whole life, beginning with my very first listen to Meet The Beatles, which my beloved late grandmother gifted me when I was a preteen. This biography was an absolute JOY to listen to! The research and writing of this biography are exceptional! I loved this so much mid-listen that I also purchased the book, which has some amazing photos. I cannot wait for volume 2! Five radiant stars! *****

A must read for any Beatles fan.

A wonderful book. Funny, poignant, informative, and rather sad in parts.

Really great narrator, only complaint is his insistence on doing a rather extreme accent for every person. His impressions of the Fab 4 are great, but really don't need these thick, exaggerated voices for the Germans, Americans, etc...

Cannot wait for volume 2!

unparalleled access to the Beatles from inception

an extraordinary account of the sun moon and stars aligning through day-to-day seemingly happenstance circumstances that formed and catapulted The Beatles to be the biggest music group in human history.

Best book I've listened to on Audible. Period.

Only one warning: you will be left with a terrible craving for volumes 2 & 3, which are still in progress and yet to be released.
