About this listen

Aiden sat up suddenly as he watched a girl climb up out of the water and onto the dock. She laughed, then said something to the others. She jumped back in as the pontoon boat passed by. “Wow, who is that?”
His dad gazed over his shoulder. “That’s Bob Morgan’s place. He doesn’t have any children that age. They must be grandchildren. They’ll be gone in a day or two, I suppose.”
The boat slowly turned as they reached the end of the lake. They passed by the dock again. The girl stood on the dock yelling something at the other kids in the water. “She’s amazing.”
“Nah, she’s all wet. Get her dried off, fix her hair, put some makeup on her, and a nice dress, she should be even better looking.”
“I don’t see how that would be possible.” Aiden took off his hat and sunglasses to get a better view. She waved at the boat. Awkwardly, Aiden waved back.
“Now she’s spotted you. You shouldn’t have been staring at her.”
“Yes, I should have. Can you turn and give me a couple of more passes?”
“No. I’m supposed to keep you away from any summer romances while you’re on break from school. Your mom doesn’t want you to do what we did. Getting married and raising a child proved too much for me. I had to drop out my senior year.”
“I’m not you. I wonder if they would be okay with me jumping off the boat and swimming over there.”
“Probably not.” His dad gunned the engines and the boat sped up.
“Now, we’re too far away. I see how it is.” Aiden put his hat and sunglasses back on. “You know you’re only allowed to go five miles an hour on this lake.”
“This is an emergency.”
