Robert Musil hält seinen legendären Vortrag Über die Dummheit erstmals gehalten auf Einladung des österreichischen Werkbunds am 11. März 1937 in Wien – auf den Tag genau ein Jahr vor dem Anschluss Österreichs an Nazi-Deutschland. In seiner Rede formuliert er das Paradox der Dummheit, "dass jeder, der über Dummheit sprechen oder solch einem Gespräch mit Nutzen beiwohnen will, von sich voraussetzen muss, dass er nicht dumm sei und also zur Schau trägt, dass er sich für klug halte, obwohl es allgemein für ein Zeichen von Dummheit gilt, das zu tun!" Das Phänomen, von dem er spricht, ist nicht zu beseitigen und durchzieht alle Kreise.
Musil, der in seinem Fragment gebliebenen Roman Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften eine ebenso schonungslose wie erheiternde Analyse seiner Zeit vorgelegt hatte, bewies in seinem Vortrag über die Dummheit, wie unausrottbar und alle Schichten durchdringend dieses Phänomen ist: Seinen Text beendet er mit dem mehr als bedenkenswerten Satz: "Und ich erkläre mich, den Fuß auf der Grenze, außerstande, weiterzugehen; denn einen Schritt über den Punkt, wo wir halten, hinaus, und wir kämen aus dem Bereich der Dummheit, der selbst theoretisch noch abwechslungsreich ist, in das Reich der Weisheit, eine öde und im allgemeinen gemiedene Gegend."

Über den Sprecher:
Moritz Brendel lebt mit seiner Familie in Stuttgart und arbeitet auch als Hörbuchsprecher und für TV Dokus. 2001 absolvierte er eine Schauspielausbildung an der HfMdK Frankfurt am Main, war etwa 10 Jahre an mehreren Theatern u.a. am Nationaltheater Mannheim, Theater der Altstadt, Hamburger Kammerspiele und Studio Theater Stuttgart. Als Dialogbuchautor und Synchronregisseur konnte er sich mittlerweile u.a. mit internationalen Filmen wie "Inside" mit Willem Dafoe auch einen Namen machen. Mit den beiden Erzählungen "Die Versuchung der stillen Veronika" und "Die Vollendung der Liebe" von Robert Musil ist Moritz Brendel bereits als Sprecher bei der hoerbuchedition words and music zu hören.
