En fin d'après-midi, Gaston Boudouran, un riche négociant en bois, disparaît, à vélo, sur la route qui mène de Pierrelatte à Saint-Andéol.
Le mystère s'épaissit quand la bicyclette de l'homme volatilisé est retrouvée près du cadavre d'une femme inconnue.
Le Commissaire Rosic, chargé de l'enquête, penche très rapidement pour un rapt crapuleux, notamment, après avoir appris que Boudouran venait de retirer cent mille francs au guichet de sa banque et que ce dernier n'a pas été aperçu par le cantonnier travaillant toute la journée sur la fameuse route.
Mais, quand la jeune femme de Boudouran s'éclipse à son tour, les certitudes s'écroulent au fur et à mesure que l'affaire se complique...
