Better Than Chickenhawk

I have read Chickenhawk admittedly a few years ago, but this book takes you into the cockpit of these US Army Helicopter Pilots!!

I'm a retired US Navy Helicopter pilot, but from my perspective, from the training, to some of the flying back came a flood of memories.

This book is wonderful written, engrossing and engaging as you live through the training, and the 19 months of the day to day lives of these soldiers, and morn the loss of so many of this countries finest!!

I must read IMHO!! Thank you Col Jackson, looking forward to Book 2!!

Outstanding book about the war in Vietnam!

An outstanding book about the integration of helicopters into the battlefields of Vietnam. This book paints a very surreal picture of life as a combat helicopter pilot. The skills required to maneuver a helicopter in the jungles of Vietnam was a team effort. It was overall a very gritty story filled with laughter and sadness. A great tribute to all the helicopter crews who flew in combat. I couldn't put it down!

The editing on the story is bad and it makes it seem like the narrator might be bad but I don’t know if that’s true or not. Either the editing suckth much butts

Good story but :

Good story but narrator stumbles to much. Other than that very compelling story enjoyed the book very much.

WOW!

After listening to Maj. Jackson on Jocko Podcast 275. I had to listen to this book.

The bravery & heroism of these crews was amazing. The skill & determination of these pilots is inspiring.

There were many leadership lessons to be learned in this book.

I highly recommend it.

Incredible

One of my favorites! Well, written, well read! Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And I’m at the wrong one today. I’m so used to come in here now that I just pulled right on him well have a good day off I don’t need any more stuff.

Fantastic story, but has some production issues

First, don’t be thrown off with the “based on true events”. During interviews the author explains the stories are all true, but it’s listed as fiction because some family members of the deceased or the individuals still alive didn’t want their names in the book. So he changed their names around in order to tell the stories without running into legal issues.

Now, for the actual production, the narration was okay, but there is a lot of background noise (I would very much like to see the cat with the bell I kept hearing). There are some obvious sport where names of villages and regions were cut in because of pronunciation. There’s also consistent pauses where you can hear the clicking of switching to the next page.

That is where the bad ends, just wanted to get that out of the way. The actual narration is rather decent when on a roll. The technical description of what it was like to fly in a Huey is really good, the actual insight to warrant officers is really good. Who knew they did more than drink coffee and judge everyone for not being smart? I’m really glad these stories are being told, can’t wait to move on the other volumes!

Exceptional book for exceptional actions

This book is filled with stories you would think were straight out of Hollywood. It’s quite amazing that he even lived to tell them. If you have any interest in the Vietnam War and what it was actually like in the fight, this is it. Highly recommend this and Jocko Podcast 276 with the author. You will not regret either.
