Publisher's summary

Under Western Eyes, Conrad's novel of political treachery and oppression, begins with a bomb that kills a hated Russian minister of police along with innocent bystanders. A young student named Razumov hides the perpetrator, then betrays him and becomes a spy among his exiled comrades. He faces a moral dilemma from which there is no escape.

This masterwork, published six years before the Russian Revolution, is a chillingly accurate prophecy of what was to come.

Dark, complicated, verbose

This exceedingly long and sad tale of Russian revolutionaries could have been improved by a good editor.

This reader is so bad

The reader is so bad that is almost impossible to follow the sentences. He seems to just read to the the first comma, make an abrupt, meaningless pause, and then read on to the following one, after which he just halts before lurching on. Conrad may be difficult to read in a way that makes him an easy to follow (especially if the reader has not tried to understand the sentence before plunging in), but this reader makes it impossible to puzzle out every sentence. I returned it and purchased the only other version available which seems to be better initially, and cannot possibly be worse. I can't review the book itself until I finish listening to it, but this audiobook is horrible.

Perfect narrator, great story

George Guidall does a brilliant job of this psychological thriller. A genuine classic, reminded me of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Great insight into someone who is put into an impossible situation, unwillingly dragged into a terrorist act in tsarist Russia. Conrad is a great story-teller.
