About this listen
Many theologians, Bible scholars, and others have written commentaries on the Old Testament. And almost without exception, they have attempted to explain the intent and spiritual implications represented by the conflicting statements of the ancient writers without taking issue with the content itself.
Unholy Dilemma: A Search for Logic in the Old Testament departs from the approach of presuming to divine what the ancient writers meant to say, and merely examines what they actually did say.
Starting with Genesis and culminating in Malachi, Unholy Dilemma strives to examine statements and claims made by the various Old Testament writers, and then analyzes them in light of history, science, human physiology, archaeological discoveries, and plain common sense. The results are fascinating, compelling, and at times, perplexing.
Biblical myths and superstitions are revealed for what they actually are. Impossibilities supposedly based on natural science are exposed as fraudulent claims. Acts of genocide which are claimed are discussed and questioned. And where I found truth and moral instruction—that too, was highlighted. The only explanation we have of the nature of God is obtained solely via the writings of the Old and New Testament authors. Since no one has actually seen or talked with God, everything we believe is obtained from the writings of ancient and superstitious people who in turn got their information from other individuals.
Unholy Dilemma does not begin with any particular agenda or inflexible viewpoint regarding the accuracy and truthfulness of the Old Testament scriptures. The information I discovered when I turned over a specific rock is all that I discuss. I add nothing and take nothing away! The incongruity between the gods of the Old and New Testaments are compared for analysis. The fact that both gods are claimed to be one is also discussed. And the fact that the two are claimed to be the same entity, although their natures seem to be at complete variance, is also discussed.
Unholy Dilemma is an interesting and revealing analysis of Old Testament stories and individuals which makes no attempt at being religiously correct or adhering to established dogma. The Bible is a fascinating book. It is also a very accommodating book. It allows one to formulate any opinion one desires. If you wish to believe that God is good—that’s in the book. If you think God is evil—that’s in the book too. Think no one has ever seen God—that’s in the book too. Think individuals have seen God face to face—it’s also in the book. Want to prove God is omnipresent—that’s in the book. Think God is surprised by events he stumbles upon by chance—that’s in the book as well. This book will open up a whole new way of hearing the Bible, and may even help you decide what value the Old Testament writings have regarding your psychological and spiritual needs.

The final world dictator seeking global domination will also be an “Assyrian” who is here characterized by a bow, riding a white horse. It is interesting how many confuse this counterfeit with the rider of the white horse in Revelation 19. In chapter six, however, this rider is among some very bad company! Behold a White Horse explores the career of the first of these “Four Horsemen” who seems to have at least 33 titles in the Old Testament and 13 in the New Testament and the common term “AntiChrist” really isn’t one of them.

These stories spoke very differently to their original audience than they do to us, and they reflect a radically distinct understanding of reality and the human mind. Yet over the course of the thousand-year biblical era, encounters with God changed dramatically.

Story
What sort of "person" is God? Is it possible to approach him not as an object of religious reverence, but as the protagonist of the world's greatest book--as a character who possesses all the depths, contradictions, and abiguities of a Hamlet? In this "brilliant, audacious book" ( Chicago Tribune), a former Jesuit marshalls a vast array of learning and knowledge of the Hebrew Bible to illuminate God--and man--with a sense of discovery and wonder.

Story
In contrast to the oppressive Roman military occupation of the first century, Crossan examines the meaning of the non-violent Kingdom of God prophesized by Jesus and the equality advocated by Paul to the early Christian churches. Crossan contrasts these messages of peace with the misinterpreted apocalyptic vision from the Book of Revelation, which has been misrepresented by modern right-wing theologians and televangelists to justify US military actions in the Middle East.

Who is Allah? What does he ask of those who submit to his teachings? Pulitzer Prize-winner Jack Miles gives us a deeply probing, revelatory portrait of the world’s second largest, fastest-growing, and perhaps most tragically misunderstood religion. In doing so, Miles illuminates what is unique about Allah, his teachings, and his resolutely merciful temperament, and he thereby reveals that which is false, distorted, or simply absent from the popular conception of the heart of Islam.

This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevant - both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written.

Story
In a book that took eight years to research and write, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman explores how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty Creator of all things. Ehrman sketches Jesus's transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus's followers had visions of him after his death - alive again - did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God.
