About this listen
United States of True Crime is an anthology series with books devoted to the most disturbing cases in each of the 50 states. This audiobook focuses on 20 of the most chilling crimes in California history.
True crime junkies may recognize some of the highly publicized cases, but I’ve made sure to include lesser-known, equally unsettling crimes.
Cases included in this book:
- Joseph James DeAngelo: serial killer who only got caught through DNA evidence almost four decades after his first murder.
- Lonnie David Franklin, Jr: serial killer on the LA Southside who inexplicably took a two decade hiatus from his crimes.
- Samuel Little: most prolific serial killer in the United States. The FBI believes he’s responsible for 93 murders.
- Gerald and Charlene Gallego: killer husband and wife duo who abducted young girls to use as sex slaves.
- Kidnapping of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn: a young couple was kidnapped and then accused by law enforcement of faking the horrific ordeal.
- The Unsolved Doodler Murders: serial murderer who targeted homosexual men in the 1970s.
- Zebra Killers: racially motivated murders of white citizens in San Francisco.
- Brenda Ann Spencer: the original school shooter.
- Juan Corona: convicted of the murders of 25 migrant workers.
- Mardiros Iskenderian: murdered his mother and sister in a dispute over the family fortune.
- Patrick Kearney: serial killer who murdered at least 21 boys and disposed of their bodies in trash bags across Southern California.
- The Chinese Massacre of 1871: dispute that resulted in the murder of 18 Chinese immigrants; believed to be the most lethal example of racial violence ever recorded in Los Angeles.
- Leonard Lake & Charles Ng: murderous partners who abducted couples, murdering the males and holding females in their dungeon.
- Gordon Stewart Northcott: serial murderer who targeted boys in the 1920s.
- Kevin James Woodward: tech CEO who allegedly killed his roommate’s girlfriend out of jealousy.
- Timothy Joseph McGhee: ruthless gang leader responsible for at least 12 murders.
- The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood: Hollywood starlet who drown while vacationing with her husband on his yacht under mysterious circumstances.
- The Murder of Tushar Atre: tech millionaire murdered by his employees.
- Omaima Nelson: woman who murdered her husband and admitted to eating his body.
- Rodney Halbower: another woman spent almost 30 years in jail for one of his grisly murders until the real murderer was finally convicted through DNA found at the scene.
If you’re a true crime enthusiast who enjoys learning about some of the most depraved monsters in our country, you will love United States of True Crime: California.

Story
Eight true crime stories of murder and mayhem. In my first audiobook as a true crime author I've started with a few of the stories that have haunted me for some time. Some of these stories are unbelievable in their brutality while others are astounding in the stupidity of the killers. This collection of stories are from all around the globe and have no common thread between them other than that they are both thought provoking and disturbing. The stories included in this anthology are dark and creepy and will leave you with a new understanding of just how fragile the human mind can be.

Story
On May 31, 2014, in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls attempted to stab their classmate to death. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier’s violence was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they committed their crime under the influence of a figure born by the internet: the so-called “Slenderman”. Yet the even more urgent aspect of the story, that the children involved suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses, often went overlooked in coverage of the case.

Story
Prostitutes and animals could no longer satisfy Peter Kürten’s sexual deviancy. During a burglary of a local tavern, he stumbled upon a nine-year-old girl asleep in her bed. He strangled her, slashed her throat with a pocket knife, and orgasmed upon hearing her blood drip to the floor. His crimes were halted by World War I and an eight-year prison sentence but he unleashed his urges with a spate of brutal murders in 1929 earning him the nickname "The Düsseldorf Monster."

Story
In September of 1990, in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, sixteen-year-old Lisa Pruett was on her way to a midnight tryst with her boyfriend when she was viciously stabbed to death only thirty feet from the boy's home. The murder cast a palpable gloom over the upscale community and sparked accusations, theories, and rumors among Lisa's friends and peers. With a fresh perspective and painstaking research, James Renner reconstructs the events leading up to and following that heartbreaking night. What emerges is a portrait of a community seething with dark undercurrents.

There is little more terrifying than those who hunt, stalk, and snatch their prey under the cloak of darkness. These hunters search not for animals, but for the touch, taste, and empowerment of human flesh. They are cannibals, vampires, and monsters, and they walk among us. These serial killers are not mythical beasts with horns and shaggy hair. They are people living among society, going about their day-to-day activities until nightfall. They are the Dennis Rader's, the fathers, husbands, church-going members of the community.

Story
In this unique book, Peter Vronsky documents the psychological, investigative, and cultural aspects of serial murder, beginning with its first recorded instance in ancient Rome, through 15th-century France, up to such notorious contemporary cases as cannibal/necrophile Ed Kemper, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted Bundy, and the emergence of what he classifies as "the serial rampage killer" such as Andrew Cunanan.

Story
The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

True crime cases in California
The author goes through some well-known true crime cases in California on audio. If you have triggers please be aware. the author does emphasize that and I agree. This not for children, adults content.
Now that being said, each story is read with all the details possible about the case, while not being gory. It does give an accurate description of the events that occurred. Also what was the atmosphere at that time in the surrounding areas. How were people acting during the time of the crimes.
If you enjoy true crime cases, you will enjoy this.

Great Read.
Loved it! There are many stories to make a few volumes of this series. The author narrator does well enough getting the summary of the story across succinctly and never takes a long time on any one case.

This series could be great…
The stories presented in this book are informative and a must for any true crime buff; however, the narrator reads in such a dry and clinical manner that it’s difficult to listen to and comes off like a college essay being read in front of a large group by a nervous student. No a fan of the narrator.

Love how Ashley tells these stories
These stories are told respectfully towards the victims and with just the facts. I love how she doesn’t waste time speculating or with too much conjecture.
The author’s voice is perfect for this genre. She sounds like she should be on Dateline.
Each story isn’t too long, but it’s like a high level overview. Love that I hadn’t heard of the majority of these cases.

I love how these books touch the surface of each crime/criminal. They’re well done, just enough to pique your interest. Doesn’t get bogged down in armchair detective work and speculation. Sticks to the facts and is respectful of the victims

Sad, heart wrenching yet eye opening
Very interesting to hear about these murder cases from other states. Sad and heartbreaking, but also eye opening to see what kind of perverts and psychopaths are really living in our world.

Hooked me in on First Page
I like how the other talks about a case at the very beginning of the book that makes you think if that case was real or Hollywood. Doing a lot of research on cases I already knew the case results but it was interesting to hear more about it. I enjoy reading this cases per state. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Love It
I appreciated the authors well-researched and insightful content which was delivered in a concise and thorough way. Some of the cases I wasn't familiar with, and that was very nice. The narration was also quite good. I would definitely recommend this series, and this edition in particular.
