About this listen
Eighteen-year-old Katherine Owens is the daughter of survivalists. She knows how to take care of herself. Then the unthinkable happens: the apocalypse. Now, she must use her skills to survive this world, one with new rules and harsher realities. Kevin Lockheart comes from a family of military veterans. He knows what to do in a crisis situation. His world comes crashing down when the zombie apocalypse takes the ground out from under him. Then this new world isn't so bad when he meets Kat. His world crashes again as he falls for this stubborn woman. The world is not what it used to be. Zombies roam freely; humans can't be trusted. Any choice is life or death. To survive, one must become as hard as the world. People die at every turn and danger lurks. The survivors must learn that nowhere is safe; their lives are always at stake.

A solid debut.
I listened to this book over the course of work last wek. I found the characters and storyline interesting, without being derivative of so many of the zombie apocalypse tropes used today. The main character was authentic feeling, being an 18 year old girl that reminded me of my 2 daughters around that age. The struggles they go through to survive are pretty traumatic, as they would be. The only issue I had with the story was the part where the main character is sexually assualted by a group of scum. She just brushed it off in a few days, which just didnt really seem realistic, even in the harsh new reality. Other than that, it is a solid zombie novel, and a good start to a series.
As far as narration, Leslie Miller did a good job with the various voices, but struggled with pacing in a few places. Not something that made it unlistenable, just a little jarring at those spots. Overall, a good first novel. Should be fun seeing where it goes from here.

Young Author cutting her teeth
I have to say i am pretty impressed with this author. She is young and I believe this was her first go at a book. Considering her youth this book was pretty tame compared to other books in this genre but it is action packed and fast paced. There were a few things that were difficult to believe and just stick out but hey zombies are difficult to believe as well. The author seemed to finally catch a stride towards the end of the book and did an effective job at a cliff ham hanger. I can't wait to see what she does for a file follow up. She is definitely an author to watch. The narrarator did a fantastic job with the characters. She was able to breathe life into the characters and was able to smooth over the problems. I think anyone loving this genre will love this book and should add this book to their library. again definitely an author to watch and watch her grow through each book. Very exciting times.
