About this listen

Bruce Friedrich, director of vegan outreach for PETA, argues that a vegetarian diet is the only diet that takes seriously the health and environmental implications of animal agriculture. He also discusses the impact of factory farming and slaughterhouse consolidation on worker safety, Third World poverty, and animal welfare.© PETA Foundation Diets, Nutrition & Healthy Eating Vegan Plant-Based Diet

Totally misleading title

What disappointed you about Vegetarianism in a Nutshell?

The fact that the title is totally misleading and does not reflect the content of the book. I was expecting general information about vegetarianism, a little history, for example, reasons why people decide to become vegetarians, various dietary and social aspects, eating in restaurants, food choices when travelling... various aspects related to vegetarianism, in short. I'm a vegetarian and I would have liked to hear other people's views on the topic. What I got instead was a sermon against vegetarianism and for veganism.

What was most disappointing about Bruce Friedrich???s story?

I heard the same thing over and over again. Every few sentences, I was told the vegan diet is the only reasonable one to choose.

Any additional comments?

If you want to convert people to veganism and militate for that, that's just fine, those arguments are interesting to listen to, but please be honest and open about it, just put it in the title. How can you persuade people if you start by creating false expectations, by sort of lying to them?

A good introduction

It's good to see some vegetarian selections showing up at Audible! This is a good (if somewhat brief) introduction to the reasons people decide to become non-meat-eaters. It's easy for narrow-minded people to belittle the compassionate, but if you have a heart, it will go out to the animals who suffer the pain and terror of slaughter for your "happy meal." This audiobook also details how the environment suffers from the slaughter, as well as the health problems associated with eating meat. Perhaps Audible will consider adding books by Pete Seeger and other notable animal-rights activists. Until then, this is a good start.

WARNING: PETA Propaganda

This audiobook had less to do with vegetarianism and more to do with the generic PETA stance about animal cruelty, animal byproducts and how eating "Flesh" is bad for you. Thank god it was so short. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY

Life Altering!

This audio essay opened my eyes and completely changed my life! I am so thrilled to see it on Audible!

In "Vegetarianism in a Nutshell," Friedrich eloquently tells us about the horrendous treatment of animals in today's factory farms, the environmental devastation of the industry as well as the health risks associated with eating animal products.

But don't think this piece is a downer. On the contrary, it is empowering! It is an introduction to a new, compassionate life. An awesome side-effect is greatly improved health and wellbeing. I lost weight, my skin improved and I have so much more energy!

I realized how ludicrous it is to live off of animal products. Veganism just makes sense!

Whoa -- too much information for a beginner!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is for those who really WANT to know the behind-the-scenes graphic details of what happens to their food (especially meat -- how it's killed, etc) before it gets to you. I was wanting more useful information -- the ABC's of vegetarianism, not the "why's" of veganism. Very disappointed -- and W-A-A-A-Y creeped out.

A real eye opener

Although I am not a vegetarian, this look into how the meat industry treats animals was a real eye opener for me and not a pleasant one. This is not an audio book that I would say is a pleasure to listen to but necessary to understand how these mass producers of meat products are treating animals. I for one have made a decision to not support companies such as KFC or other organizations. I have drastically cut down on animal products and will probably end up becoming a vegetarian. This book is a good first step for those that have questioned the consumption of animal products.

Clear, concise and influential. Strong arguments.

This book makes a rock solid case for veganism. Impossible to simply disregard with no guilt or pangs of conscience.
