About this listen

Venice stands, as she loves to tell you, on the frontiers of the east and west, half-way between the setting and the rising sun. Goethe calls her "the market-place of the Morning and the Evening lands". Certainly no city on earth gives a more immediate impression of symmetry and unity, or seems more patently born to greatness.

Enjoy the animated details but the POV feels like it’s from the 19th century. A bit backwards that treads on lots of stereotypes.

Nostalgic but outdated

This is a very thoughtful and thorough history of Venice. I can’t imagine how many years it must’ve taken to do the research to create such an incredible story. And it is a story written with exceptional pros. The narration is also quite good.

Incredible breadth and depth!

This is a keep-in-the-library book to listen to again and again. If you’ve been to Venice, it’s a spectacular reminder. If you haven’t been to Venice, it’ll put you on a plane.

Stunning descriptions, spectacular narrator!

The live of an ancient city comes vividly out of Jan Morris’s sophisticated and humorous words. Great narrative performance. I ended up ordering two more books read by Sebastian Comberti.

Stunning
