About this listen

Rome, AD 71. Marcus Didius Falco is desperate to leave the notorious Lautumiae prison—though being bailed out by his mother is a slight indignity.

Things go from bad to worse when a group of nouveau riche ex-slaves hire him to outwit a fortune-hunting redhead whose husbands have a habit of dying accidentally, leaving him up against a female contortionist, her extra-friendly snake, indigestible cakes, and rent racketeers. All the while Falco tries to lure Helena Justina to live with him, a dangerous proposition given the notorious instability of Roman real estate. In a case of murder as complicated as he ever faced, Falco is at his very finest.

Decent book, initial sound issue

The narration is excellent but the first chapter or several chapters house terrible sound quality issues including being recorded at a very low sound level and loud background noises including people talking.

Wonderful sense of place

A great detective story set in Ancient Rome where the city and its futons become s character in the plot. Falco feels like an old friend. A good performance by Prebble although his accent mag be a bug refined. In some of the other audiobooks in the series, Christian Rodska gives a more textured performance.

Great stories, beautifully read!

If you’re a fan of historical mysteries, this series is lots of fun! The setting, the characters, drama and everyday life of Ancient Rome are all very satisfying.

Excellent storytelling. Fun, Emotional, Impactful

Am enjoying this series immensely and wish to do the author justice by leaving reviews. I started with the last two books and made my way here. Though the author uses contemporaneous vernacular and treads on anachronism it works and produces a mentally picturesque backdrop.

great story, great performance!

I read the books back in the 1990s and decided to give the audiobooks a try 20 odd years later. the stories are still great and the narrator is really, really good. well worth the money and the time to listen to it!
