About this listen

Russell Walker retreats from the shock of his wife's death by becoming a hermit in the woods of British Columbia. very bad deaths

for a dark story, it was written with such humor that it was very enjoyable. the reader really brought it to life and was the main reason I enjoyed it so much.

Excellent Story!

Funny yet serious enough to be more than believable. Spider Robinson is not only a talented writer, but an amazing narrator. The character development was superb; magnitudes better than the most famous classics.

Spider actually scared me with this one. Intense.

Be Damned sure you're ready for a rough time. This is the rawest, darkest book I remember having ever read and I was the kid who read about Nazi Germany when I was 10.

Spider has created an antagonist so horrifying Darth, Khan, and James M would run screaming into the dark if they crossed his path. Not that they would ever get the chance.

I have faced real life monsters and bared my teeth at them. This is the first character I would rather cut my own throat with a butter knife than let face down.

Be advised.

This amusing, terrible , and fun story. Most hear!

This would make a great sci-fi, horror, mystery movie. It is suspenseful, scary, nostalgic, and fun.

Loved the story and narration!

Loved the story and narration! I enjoy when an author is able to successfully narrate his own stories. It adds to the experience.

Decent book but a bit disjointed

Reading Spider is just like hanging out with an old friend. I can just easily identify with his writing style and his train of thoughts. This book started out a bit disjointed but finished strong. I enjoyed it.

Great use of sarcasm!

Dry humor and sarcasm abounds, good storyline. Best read in a while. Why do they have a word minimum for reviews?

It began so well

It began perfectly. So much interesting stuff. Interesting narration. Then it devolved into politics. And worse, into maximum self indulgence. Into what seemed like the tenth hour of description of what a Thoracotomy feels like, I just gave up. Not just because it was wildly medically inaccurate, which I know as a surgeon, but because it just made him look like a baby rather than someone “well acquainted with pain”.

Could’ve been so interesting in hands better suited to a thriller.
