About this listen

Life in the rugged Appalachian Mountains of the 1860s was brutal but life in those treacherous hills had never been easy. A tough life breeds hardy people and the mountain people were as unforgiving and fierce as the mountains themselves. The old ways ran strong in their blood and hatred ran bone deep. Feuds were a part of life.

The Robertson clan was a small but proud family. When a cherished member was needlessly shot down the grief-stricken Robertsons went to war against the family of her killers. The feud dragged on for years but their enemies were far too numerous.

Fourteen year old Whip and his father Noah were the last of the Robertsons. When Noah was mortally wounded in an ambush his dying wish was that Whip leave the mountains and build a new life out west. Whip gave the promise that allowed his father to pass in peace. To Whip an oath was a sacred thing and he would honor his father’s final wish as he had promised. But a blood debt was owed and before he left he would see that debt paid.

TL/DR: Reminiscent of Yellowstone TV show, could be in the same fictional universe in 1800s. Enjoyable, dark and quietly heroic - and short enough that you don't waste time if you don't like it. But you will.

I've become a fan of this author. Probably not for kids, there is a stark darkness but also a wholesome goodness and warmth.

The AI narration is good, don't let that fact give you pause.

Very enjoyable period style coming of age story with some unexpected twists, plenty of dramatic conflict and a good immersive style.

Would like to see more from Whip. Could see a series here.

Great story and storytelling.
