About this listen

National Book Award winner and New York Times best-selling author Sherman Alexie infuses his writing with biting wit and poignant insight.

As a 41-year-old man confronts his own mortality in this collection's title story, he recalls his Spokane Indian father's chilling death from alcoholism and diabetes. Another tale features an eccentric salesman pursuing a married woman from airport to airport. And then there's the film editor who sees nothing wrong with altering footage to fit preconceived views - until he becomes the target of media distortion.

Loves "Breaking and Entering"

First story was fabulous and "The Senator's son" was okay. Otherwise, nothing to write home about.

Another brilliant work by Sherman Alexie!

I am huge fan of Sherman Alexie’s work. The short stories are great. I needed the name of the short story read before each story to clearly mark the beginning of a new story.

War Dances: Short stories by Sherman Alexie

Author and narrator Alexie does not disappoint with these stories. Some are sad, some quirky, and many are funny. Alexie can slip into a "rez" accent when the story requires it, and is a superb and witty storyteller. Highly recommended.

Always Honest

Mr. Alexie knows his subject and has a gift for storytelling.
He is honest in his stories and expresses his emotions in the story.
These short stories are about his father, growing up in the Res, and the death of a neighborhood young man.
You get a sense of what it is like to be an Indian in a white man's culture and the discrimination that follows you around.
When you pick up a copy of Mr. Alexie's books, it's always a good read.

Incredible talent

Sherman Alexie really has something that hits home with me - even though we've never met I feel like I know him. I guess part of it is that he writes about my world - where I grew up and where I've lived throughout my adult years - small town Eastern Washington - the reservation, Spokane, Seattle......

Local preference aside, he is truly an amazing talent and has the ability to create characters that are so real and complete. His narration is fantastic - I'd love to hear him narrate the works of other authors. This is a group of short stories - each one a little world within itself that will transport you into the mind of the men he portrays so expertly.

Excellent story telling, both subject and narration

I have read several of Sherman Alexie's books now, half by audio book. I think i may have first heard about his work after seeing the movie Smoke Signals--still a favorite of mine. Even in his full length stories he tells his stories in vignettes, chapters or woven together short stories. I liked this short story collection, each as mesmerizing as the one before. Cannot beat Sherman's voice either.

Heartbreaking and Hilarious

Perhaps some of the humor in this vook is best appreciated by someone who has lived on a res. Perhaps the grief and fear and underlying self doubt is, too. But these things are universal in their way, and I believe anyone could find themselves in some part of these stories, told in the beautiful and rhythmic language of Alexie's style.
