Publisher's summary

Is America in a new Cold War with Russia? How does a new Cold War affect the safety and security of the United States? Does Vladimir Putin really want to destabilize the West? What should Donald Trump and America’s allies do?

America is in a new Cold War with Russia even more dangerous than the one the world barely survived in the 20th century. The Soviet Union is gone, but the two nuclear superpowers are again locked in political and military confrontations, now from Ukraine to Syria. All of this is exacerbated by Washington’s war-like demonizing of the Kremlin leadership and by Russiagate’s unprecedented allegations. US mainstream media accounts are highly selective and seriously misleading. American “disinformation”, not only Russian, is a growing peril.

In War with Russia?, Stephen F. Cohen - the widely acclaimed historian of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia - gives listeners a very different, dissenting narrative of this more dangerous new Cold War from its origins in the 1990s, the actual role of Vladimir Putin, and the 2014 Ukrainian crisis to Donald Trump’s election and today’s unprecedented Russiagate allegations. Topics include:

  • Distorting Russia
  • US Follies and Media Malpractices 2016
  • The Obama Administration Escalates Military Confrontation With Russia
  • Was Putin’s Syria Withdrawal Really a “Surprise”?
  • Trump vs. Triumphalism
  • Has Washington Gone Rogue?
  • Blaming Brexit on Putin and Voters
  • Washington Warmongers, Moscow Prepares
  • Trump Could End the New Cold War
  • The Real Enemies of US Security
  • Kremlin-Baiting President Trump
  • Neo-McCarthyism Is Now Politically Correct
  • Terrorism and Russiagate
  • Cold-War News Not “Fit to Print”
  • Has NATO Expansion Made Anyone Safer?
  • Why Russians Think America Is Attacking Them
  • How Washington Provoked - and Perhaps Lost - a New Nuclear-Arms Race
  • Russia Endorses Putin, the US and UK Condemn Him (Again)
  • Russophobia
  • Sanction Mania

Cohen’s views have made him, it is said, “America’s most controversial Russia expert”. Some say this to denounce him, others to laud him as a bold, highly informed critic of US policies and the dangers they have helped to create.

War with Russia? gives listeners a chance to decide for themselves who is right: are we living, as Cohen argues, in a time of unprecedented perils at home and abroad?

Tear up the Russia "Playbook!

Though written before the Russian military operation, or in US-speak, invasion of Ukraine, Cohen's "War with Russia?" is amazingly prescient and even prophetic. Cohen is prescient in foreseeing major elements of the Ukraine conflict. He is prophetic by holding up to clear-eyed scrutiny how Russia was for some thirty years bullied into war and Ukraine made to suffer the consequences.
NATO expansion has resulted in a shooting war accompanied by an economic war of western-imposed sanctions. The shooting war has put Ukrainians to suffering and dispersion while the US and its NATO allies keep protracting the foghting with a steady supply of arms and by refusing to enter peace negotiations to bring killing to a halt.
Cohen clearly etches the danger of nuclear war, so far avoided since the US unleashed devastation on Japan. We are not out of the woods on that score.

A different perspective

While I disagreed with the author on many points and found that at times his bias was overbearing most of his work did explain and back up points of view from the Russian perspective of an encroaching NATO and breaking of treaties and promises from the west most in particular the US. I enjoyed this perspective because to truly understand the war in Ukraine all sides points need to be read and heard.

Brilliant as always by Mr Cohen.

Mr Cohen argues for giving a chance to people who don't show the official point of view place at the table. He undetstands that criticism of policy is not only patriotic and tigjt thing to do. it is essential for the success of that policy.

A book giving the truth about Russoa

Rather than demonizing Putin and Russia for the current cold war, Mr. Cohen shows how American actions in the post-Soviet period contributed to it. He is a lone voice daring to speak the truth against the deep state on this issue. If you want to better understand Russia today, I recommend you read this book.

Very informative

Book covers info that the main stream media refuses to cover by the late eminent Russia scholar.

Sobering

This should be mandatory reading for every competent US citizen. Sadly, many minds in this country the US suffer from an elepantisis of American Patriotism. Sadly, there are people who think a nuclear war can be " Won". Most people running their mouths today have not a clue about the former Soviet Union and it's history.

Prophetic yet controversial account by the famous late historian

We’ll be missing Stephen Cohen. His challenging point of view is lacking now in media.Very interesting book. I was not impressed by it and the reason though maybe it’s recording problems, but somehow Holden Still’s pitch of voice is kind of sharp and unpleasant.
