Garten, Schloss und Stadt Schwetzingen bilden ein einmaliges Barockensemble. Durch die Förderung von Kurfürst Carl Theodor wurde aus dem kleinen Wasserschloss ein Glanzlicht der Barockkultur im deutschen Südwesten, das heute noch in den alljährlichen Schwetzinger Festspielenim Zusammenklang von Architektur, Gartenbaukunst und Musik lebendig wird. Das Schwetzinger Ensemble ist auf dem besten Weg zum Weltkulturerbe; über den Antrag wird im Sommer 2009 entschieden.
