What Remains of Us is a post-apocalyptic survival thriller and the second installment in the Hg34 series. The story picks up immediately where book 1, We All Fall Down, left off, thrusting readers deeper into a bleak, virus-ravaged world torn apart by the Hg34 outbreak. It’s possible to read this book as a standalone, but it may be a bit confusing at the beginning when attempting to understand who’s who and what transpired in book 1. Once standalone readers get past the initial reintroduction of all the characters (about the 25 percent mark), the story flows well and takes readers on a harrowing journey with the characters.

The story follows a band of surviving characters (from book 1)—protagonist Libby, her son Nicky, young adult brothers Gideon and Lincoln, former US President Virginia, and others—as they travel through a wasteland of decimated towns and hidden horrors, searching for other survivors and answers. Their journey uncovers buried secrets about the origins of the virus, and various clues point them to travel to North Dakota, where secrets and, unbeknownst to them, trouble await.

In contrast to the action-packed 1st book in the series, this sequel focuses more on character growth and emotionally intense situations. Readers discover more about each character’s motivations and backstory, and intriguing new characters emerge with surprising revelations that make the narrative emotionally resonant and compelling. The relationship between Liv and the brothers, Lincoln and Gideon, further develops in this book. In addition, the heartwarming bond between Nicky and Lincoln helps raise the sinking morale of the travelling band. With the characters needing to rely on each other more and forced to make mutual decisions for their survival, the “found family” vibe of the band becomes more pronounced!

The world-building is vivid and descriptive but not overly expansive. The virus’s devastation is mostly described through hauntingly abandoned buildings/homes, underground horrors, and eerie landscapes. The research base where the characters discover shocking secrets of the virus’s origin is intricately detailed with its secret panels, hidden rooms, and ominous underground laboratory. Overall, the author does a great job only detailing what’s necessary for plot expansion and atmospheric suspense, which helps to keep the story always moving and makes it easier to binge-read!

The narrative toggles between the 3rd-person POVs of all of the main characters—but the perspectives of Libby, brothers Lincoln and Gideon, and Rebecca are the main focus. Despite the many POVs, the transitions feel seamless and easy to follow. The story starts off with a slower pace, perhaps intentionally so that standalone readers (and those who read book 1 a while back) can catch up on the characters and the storyline. After readers adjust to where the first book left off, there is no meandering, just purposeful plot points filled with suspense and high stakes. The story culminates with a thrilling showdown, followed shortly by an abrupt cliffhanger—one that will leave readers eager for the next book in the series!

Overall, What Remains of Us is a gripping and intense continuation of the Hg34 series that prioritizes character development over nonstop action. But it’s recommended to first read book 1, We All Fall Down, as jumping into this book without context may lead to initial confusion. For readers who enjoy character-driven dystopian stories with high stakes and emotional intensity, this series is a must-read—and you’ll be glad to know that the gripping final installment, The Last Survivors, is out now! If you’re considering the audiobook, Rebecca Avery’s narration is a real standout, and you can easily binge-listen in a single day!

🎙️Narrator Performance🎙️

Rebecca Avery does a standout job giving unique voices to so many different characters—notably Libby, her young son Nicky, brothers Lincoln and Gideon, Rebecca, Darren, and former US President Virginia! Avery uses a determined yet mistrustful tone to portray Libby, a woman who’s not entirely trusting of her companions and who’s constantly concerned for her son’s welfare. Avery gives a wonderful performance of 7-year-old Nicky, with a convincing childlike voice and exuberant energy that’s heartwarming to listen to. The dialogue between Nicky and Lincoln is one of the highlights of the story, and Avery makes their brotherly-like bond very compelling and heartfelt. Avery also provides very distinct voices for the older characters—Virginia, the ailing former US president, and Darron—and the dialogue between them becomes more intriguing as they form a closer bond later in the story.

Avery paces the story perfectly, with slower pacing at the start—ideal for standalone readers who need to get acquainted with the characters and what transpired in book 1. Once the plot gets moving, Avery increases her pacing—not only to match the urgency of the travelling band (on their trek to North Dakota) but also to accurately convey the increasing tension and uncertainty the characters are feeling. The "found family" trope is very pronounced in the second half, especially when the characters take refuge in Rebecca’s childhood home to plan their next steps. Avery’s performance of the dialogue here showcases a developing family-like dynamic, with more warmth and a sense of security in the characters’s voices—especially from Nicki, who provides a much-needed sense of optimism amidst all the dread!

The final scenes are fast and furious, and Avery maintains a quick pace, coupled with emotionally charged dialogue from Libby and Rebecca, to keep listeners fully engrossed!
