About this listen

What does the Bible say about women in leadership? The articles in this book originated as Grace Communion International wrestled with this question. The early articles were designed for members. As we explored the subject, we saw that more detailed work was warranted, and in 2004, we began an exegetical study of the key passages, designed for pastors. A careful study was done in Scripture, with special attention to certain key New Testament texts. Both complementarian and egalitarian scholars sometimes push the evidence further than is warranted. With a cautious approach, we concluded that women may serve as pastors. Each chapter of this book originated as a distinct study. Michael Morrison wrote a draft, and it was then circulated to all members of the doctrinal team. After their edits were incorporated, the draft was sent to all our national leaders and district superintendents. After their input and edits, the revised paper was sent to all of our pastors by email. It was then revised again, based on their input, and published for all our members to read. We published approximately one study every two months, as we worked through the questions in a systematic way. Most of this exegetical work was done in 2005-2006.We believe it is just as important for members to see how we reach our conclusion, as it is to read the final decision. It is our prayer that we will all learn from the process, and be filled “with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that [we] may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10).
