Glenna McMann had been shunned, teased and bullied since the seventh grade. Her rural Alabama classmates, especially the boys, enjoyed making nasty comments about the early development of her body, especially her breasts. Sam and his best friend, Nolan, earn scholarships fulfilling their dreams of being college athletes. Sam's misunderstood connection to Glenna and Bobby Jackson's plotting make him a suspect and he loses his scholarship while Nolan becomes a rising star. Sam joins the Army and serves in the bloody and vicious Vietnam conflict. Before Vietnam, he thought he had experienced terrible things, but the war is horror beyond his imagination. The twist to the story is who else dies in this coming of age story of hatred, betrayal, pain and recovery.
