I just finished the audiobook version of Why Be a 9 When You Can Be a 10, and let me tell you: Salisha Thomas delivers. From the very first chapter, I felt like I was sitting across from a friend who's not just cheering me on but challenging me to level up. She opens with vulnerability and authenticity that immediately hooks you, whether you know her personally (I do!) or are hearing her story for the first time. There’s a perfect balance of Broadway-level storytelling, self-help gems, and laugh-out-loud one-liners. Her retelling of experiences had me cracking up, and even though I’d heard some before, the detail and pacing in the audiobook made it feel brand new. For those not from the theatre world, Salisha does an incredible job painting scenes. I loved the homework prompts at the end of chapters. They’re practical and reflective, perfect for journaling, mentoring, or even team workshops. I’ve already started applying some of the principles to my life and with 2025 almost halfway done, I’m feeling a New Year’s resolution type of momentum. While listening to this book, I thought of one of my young Black female mentees, so I purchased a copy and shipped it to her. I’m now I’m figuring out how to use specific chapters as a leadership curriculum for the Resident Advisors I supervise at Chapman University. Salisha’s voice (literally and figuratively) is funny, affirming, vulnerable, and wise. She makes you laugh, then makes you pause and reflect, and then makes you get to work. This book isn’t just about becoming a “10”, it’s about remembering you already are one and choosing to show up that way every day. If you’re navigating big dreams, self-doubt, career pivots, or just need a pep talk that doesn’t sugarcoat, it’s all here. Thank you, Salisha.
