About this listen

Chilling witchcraft and dark powers are at the centre of this supernatural thriller from Aurealis Award-winning author Kim Wilkins.

Lisa Sheehan is a struggling musician working among the smoky pits and hollows of the underground music scene. But the prospect of her band’s success is soured when their fans start turning up dead in a forest outside town. At the same time, Lisa’s sleep becomes haunted by disturbing dreams and memories that aren’t her own.

Can the murders in Lisa’s 20th century life be linked to events in the 17th century? To a web of sorcery and betrayal spanning nearly 400 years? A web of erotic obsession and an unholy pact with dark forces beyond imagining....

As a terrifying legacy is played out, Lisa must confront her greatest enemy – and her greatest love.

I wish I could say I enjoyed this book, but I couldn’t get past the narrator’s habit of taking enormous, gulping breaths between each paragraph. She spoke so fast, and instead of pausing a little between sentences to take normal breaths, she would wait until the end of a paragraph and then take a huge breath. I listened about an hour. I gave it that much, hoping it would get better but it didn’t, and it got to where I didn’t even know what was going on with the story, because that’s all I could hear. It might not bother someone else, but for me, it was like nails on a chalkboard.

The narrator had me out of breath the entire time. Her constant breath taking was very annoying. Would have loved to hear the story but may have to read the book instead of listening to it.
