About this listen

He'll protect her . . . even if he has to take her captive to save her.

Tech wiz and former elite soldier Forest "Trees" Scott had one mission: Rescue the woman being hunted by a vicious cartel and get her to safety. It should have been simple . . . but the minute he sees the wary beauty with haunted eyes, his desire for her complicates everything. So does her stubborn refusal to trust him. When Trees is forced to abduct her, she vows to hate him—even as he finds himself falling in love . . .

For six years, Laila Torres has known nothing but brutality at the hands of men, so when the massive stranger with the forbidding mien kidnaps her, she's frightened—and furious. But the giant's protective care shocks her. With every word, he proves steadfast. With every forbidden touch, he awakens the woman in her. Soon, she's facing the terrifying realization that he's also dangerously close to capturing her heart.

But their ruthless enemies are closing in, threatening everything Laila holds dear. When she's forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice, will she trust Trees and their love to save her?

Contains mature themes.

It is almost exactly the same book as the one before this one.

Until the very end it is mostly the same book. A few things thrown in here and there but much is exactly the same.

Poor story telling and character development

“Wicked Ties” was the first book I read by Shayla Black and I thought is was so steamy, had really interesting and complex characters, and was just overall a great story. I’ve since read more of her stories and each one gets worse and worse. I think I’m officially done with this author.
Firstly Layla’s character has no substance save her abuse that is brought up a thousand times throughout the novel. Her being raped and beat is the main focus of her storyline and it’s uncomfortable to continually hear how horrible she was treated. At certain points her rape is brought up for no real reason at all. Layla’s character is very one dimensional; she’s untrusting, has been abused, and refuses to wear clothes. Her refusal to wear clothes make no sense at all.
Unlike Black’s previous books, she doesn’t give a voice to the female protagonist and the personality she does give is contradictory. She’s only 22 and has been held captive for many years, but somehow has an extensive vocabulary and a sharp strategic mind. However when talking to Trees she seems to have no knowledge of very simple concepts. She goes between been quick witted to dim witted throughout the whole story.
Black’s other female protagonists from other books are written as sweet yet strong, brave, and described in great detail both physically and mentally. However Layla is not given the same care and development for her character.
Her trying to give trees a blowjob so he’ll sleep deeply while she escapes? Very unsettling and doesn’t make sense for a woman who has been so horribly abused.
The fact that the entire story is narrated in a man’s voice, again neglects Layla’s perspective and takes away her humanity.
I think it’s very irresponsible to write ethnic characters when you clearly have no interest or respect for the people. Too many negative stereotypes: drug cartel, thugs, rapists and Layla being under 5 feet tall. As a Mexican woman this was almost unbearable to read and I only finished the book so I could leave an honest review. Shayla, please stick to the characters you’re comfortable writing. It was very clear you didn’t see the beauty or have respect for this abused Mexican woman you created. I’ve read/listened to so many of your books and Layla was the least thought out and probably the least likable of all your characters.
And to top it all off, the sex scenes were trash. What a waste of a credit.

It’s not a complete book

I can not stand listening to a book for 10 hours and it doesn’t even have an ending. State that upfront so we don’t waste a credit.

Re-tell

I was a little disappointed. This was the same as the last book just told from a different view.
