Publisher's summary

For many decades, stories of betrayal, darkness, and blood have surrounded the mysterious land of Aragnar. Now, those tales have become a shocking reality, revealing a perilously beautiful land fraught with danger, discovery, and adventure. When a young woman is thrust into the forefront of an ancient war, her actions will determine the fate of thousands.

Finally free from the tyrannical reign of King Raveyn, Maria Fellbane and her people have found refuge in Aragnar, a foreign land on the verge of escalating war. Despite their serenity, murmurs of shadows in the dark mar the thin line between peace and fear, threatening to tear them apart once more. When tragedy strikes, Maria and Aleron must make difficult decisions to save their respective people, as well as prepare for the imminent war ahead.

Dragons and people with wings

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. I’ve not listened to Book 1 but I did not find it a real hinderance. This book follows the premise of a deceitful, manipulative non-human character named Lucifer and the king/god “the One”. There is more to it than just that, but there seems to be an obvious line between good and evil.
King Raveyn ruled as a tyrant, but he’s attempting to regain his kingdom. He has acquired the help of Lucifer, but soon finds he’s not in control as much as he thought. Amongst the destruction, Maria’s family and townsfolk have fled their home to Aragnar where another group of people live- they have wings. An unknown menace threatens both peoples. It is a huge dragon-like creature. Aleron (the prince of Aragnar destined for the throne) joins his warriors with Maria and together they attempt to save their people. Not only do they need to defeat this monstrous beast, but Raven and Lucifer present their own threats.

This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( LC Kane ) and I would listen to another. She does a wonderful job bringing out the emotions and personalities of the characters, and the fear and uncertainty within the story.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. This book is listed as preteen/ teen. I think maybe due to the amount of fighting (even though it’s not really descriptive violence) in this book, it would be more appropriate for just teens.

Wow! Couldn't put it down!

I finished this one in two days, although if I could have I would have in one day. The story picks up where the first book left off and sucks you in quickly. It was extremely hard to put down. This series has quickly become a new favorite of mine and I am now in the frustrating spot of waiting for the third book to come out. As a parent I would say that I think 3rd-4th graders and up would really enjoy this series. It's a clean book but there are a lot of battle scenes that might be a bit much for the really young readers.

LC Kane does a phenomenal job with this book too. I have listened to a few books that she has narrated and I really like her style of acting and narrating stories.
