About this listen

In Women of the Silk, Gail Tsukiyama takes listeners back to rural China in 1926, where a group of women forge a sisterhood amid the reeling machines that reverberate and clamor in a vast silk factory from dawn to dusk.

Leading the first strike the village has ever seen, the young women use the strength of their ambition, dreams, and friendship to achieve the freedom they could never have hoped for on their own.

Tsukiyama's graceful prose weaves the details of "the silk work" and Chinese village life into a story of courage and strength.

Another beautiful historical fiction!

It highlights the decisions made during times of hardships. Both families and their daughters were forced to live with the consequences of whatever fell. The strength of young girls and women forced into the new environment to work and send home money is awe-inspiring and often still tragic. Yet, these women keep going. They learn to rely on each other and form a new family - one stronger than the ties of blood.

The Bad Old Days

The Bad Old Days

Women's stories in 1930s China - never a happy time or environment for females.

Narration by Emily Woo Zeller is good.
