Publisher's summary

In these stories of her mother, her Aunt Bet, and other women who influenced her, author and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham reveals the complexity of Southern women in the days before feminism entered the common vocabulary. A legacy of independent women permeates these recollections: women who managed households, who became entrepreneurs, and who managed public facilities. The women she remembers may have been fair, but they certainly were not weak.

Editorial reviews

Recording in her Alabama home, journalist and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham shares humorous and touching tales of the important women in her life. Her warm, natural, and charming style almost convinces the listener that Windham is sitting in the next rocking chair. As she shares her recollections in a genuine Southern accent, she isn't afraid to laugh or even to burst into song. Her memories focus on Aunt Bet, who served as postmaster and cake baker in Windham's hometown of Thomasville, Alabama. The listener won't soon forget the tombstone in Aunt Bet's kitchen or her blackberry-wine dilemma. This is a sentimental journey one wishes would never end.

Critic reviews

"Kathryn Tucker Windham's stories come to life in Women to Remember, recalling family interactions and stories with roots in the author's Southern heritage. These are excellent regional folk story-telling traditions which listerners will find rich in depth." (Library Bookwatch)

Art of Southern Storytelling

I grew up listening to her stories every Friday on Alabama Public Radio. It's lovely to hear her voice again, and hard to believe she's been gone 9 years (she passed in 2011). Only criticism I have is it's too short! I could listen to her for hours.

An Alabama Treasuer

I grew up listening to my grandfather's stories of his childhood in Birmingham. One of the best treats in the fall was listening to ghost stories at Sloss Furnace.

Listening to these remembrances brings back both those days and provides a look into a long forgotten time - pre computer ; )

For some the cadence may be a little slow but sit back and let it wash over you. Try to remember that sitting around the table and talking about one's past is how we share it with those coming behind us.

Beautiful southern stories

I've purchased all of Kathryn Tucker Windham's audiobooks that are available here at Audible. She sounds quite elderly in all of them, but she does a wonderful job telling old Southern stories of her growing up years. If you enjoy southern stories, give these a try. Each one focuses on specific topics. This one tells of some of the women in her family that she admired.
