Publisher's summary

A leading national security expert, who publicly predicted Vladimir Putin's intention to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine months before it took place, lays out the case for why China's Xi Jinping is preparing to conquer Taiwan in the coming years and the dire stakes for America and the whole world if he is not deterred.

In World on the Brink, security expert Dmitri Alperovitch makes the case that we are already in the midst of Cold War II, with China, and that Taiwan is the perilous strategic flashpoint of this new conflict that risks triggering a devastating war between major nuclear powers in a similar role that West Berlin nearly played during Cold War I.

Laying out the comprehensive strategy to deter war and maintain U.S. place as the world's leading superpower in the face of rising China, Alperovitch breaks down not only the significant weaknesses that can prevent China from surpassing the United States, but also the key policies that will enable America to maintain primacy even as China ramps up its efforts.

As Alperovitch explains, we must play to our strengths and address our weaknesses, using our leverage as the strongest nation on the planet to tactfully navigate the next Cold War. This sharp, timely book is the essential blueprint for doing just that.

We know what to do, but will we?

I thought the book was well written and not overly hyperbolic about a true and present danger. The author broke down key elements of national and political vulnerabilities and outlined reasonable and achievable courses of action to overcome those threats.
One of our greatest vulnerabilities is the fact that a large portion of Americans will not listen or read a book like this. The people that search for this type of knowledge want to understand and work towards a solution. Everyone else seems to think the world runs on autopilot and their way of life couldn’t possibly be turned upside down as quickly as it can. Perhaps the saddest part is the current generation of young Americans will probably refuse to fight to defend Taiwan or sacrifice their time, energy or resources to defend and support the American interest, until it’s too late.

Our government, the US government is so caught up in bureaucracies and party line politics, They are more concerned about being reelected so they can maintain individual power and gain wealth, than they are about the messages in this book and their responsibility to take action to ensure the American way of life continues into the 22nd century and beyond.

Important Topic, Thoughtful Insights

The author did an excellent job of unpacking a complex set of issues, making them accessible to an intelligent non-expert audience without dumbing down difficult concepts. The book is extremely current, encompassing recent geopolitical developments. The narration was clear and pleasant.

Thank you

Thank you Dimitri - I appreciate your mentioning world peace as an ultimate solution and a global effort to slow or reverse climate change as a motivating factor in that pursuit. In the end, we humans have learned time and time again that violence is not the answer and that love is the most importantly thing in the universe.

a signpost for the 21st century

Should be a required read for our military academies and for any US foreign policy students or practitioners.

Realistic plan to maintain American hegemony

He does a great job spelling out how we got here, how it can go from here and what we can do about it. Best of the recent China books

Thorough and convincing analysis of US-China relationship

Alperovitch has written a thoughtful and thorough analysis of the US-China relationship for the next decade. His conclusions are, at the same time, not obvious and quite convincing. What about Russia, Iran, and N. Korea? He's got answers. Is economic decoupling the best economic strategy? His answer may surprise you. How should we support Taiwan? Ditto. If your mind is open enough to be changed, read this book.

A wake up call to the USA

Wow! Thoughtful, well constructed, and ridiculously researched! Dmitri makes it easy for someone technical or non-technical to understand. His political perspective doesn’t come across as biased towards one party or another and he emphasizes the need for action without overdramatizing the real threat that exists…and there is a REAL threat as he so eloquently dissects.

Strong overall perspective on the situation

Overall good story. There was definitely some repetitive messages and the performance was a bit robotic.
