About this listen

The first world team practice for United States women's wrestling, in 1989, consisted of two wrestlers and one coach. Ever since, it's been a long, adversity-filled battle for USA women's wrestling to become established on the the international scene. From pioneers Afsoon Roshanzamir, Tricia Saunders, and Kristie Marano to to current stars Adeline Gray and Helen Maroulis, heroes have emerged in a battle to overcome stereotypes, discrimination and other obstacles to become a fixture in the Olympic program.

Twelve years after the USA nearly had its first Olympic champion, Maroulis came through in 2016 to knock off arguably the greatest female wrestler of all time - Japan's Saori Yoshida. It showed that gold medal dreams can come true. This audiobook tells the story of the trailblazers - and the new breed they inspired.

Adversity and diversity helped create women’s wrestling

I really liked this book a lot! I love the sport of wrestling and fully sport the explosion of the women’s side of the sport. However, I was ignorant on who and how the sport was started. Even with the support in place, the current level of ignorance and dismissal shown to women athletes in the sport of wrestling it is important to know who the pioneers were to get the sport to where it is today the fastest growing high school and collegiate sport!

Powerful, powerful book

Incredible stories from of some of the pioneers of women's wrestling and what they overcame to find success on and off the mat. Each wrestler and each story is unique, and it weaves a fabric of strength, unity and inclusion for all in the sport of wrestling. These pioneers, now role models, paved the way and opened doors for the sport of wrestling to grow and now women's wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the United States! #WrestleLikeAGirl
