About this listen

Sink into the easy Texas drawl of celebrated Western novelist Elmer Kelton, the son of a Texas cowboy and a five-time Spur award winner. In this live workshop recording he'll share insights about writing in a genre that doesn't always receive the respect it's due. Kelton discusses literary prejudice against Westerns, suggests ways to find a fresh slant and create unusual characters, and reviews trail drive novels. Some of his over 2 dozen novels are: The Day the Cowboys Quit, The Time it Never Rained, and Eyes of the Hawk.©1989 Elmer Kelton (P)1989 Elmer Kelton Literary History & Criticism Words, Language & Grammar Writing & Publishing Cowboy

Excellent source, well recorded.

Would you consider the audio edition of Writing the Western Novel to be better than the print version?

When Kelton speaks about characters.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

Clarity. Sense of humour.

Another wonderful experience

I feel so lucky that these presentations have been captured by Audible and made available to writers everywhere. One reviewer said of his books that it was like going fishing. What a great way to spend an afternoon.

A must for the aspiring western author

This is for the aspiring western author. I took notes of a list of books to read if I am to learn the trade. This is not a step by step guide by any means. Hearing from those who have achieved success in this genre and what they have studied to get there is most valuable. For as short as it is, it is well worth the time.
