About this listen

If death is an end, then I know for certain there is nothing final about it.

When Nicole Kerr hit the ground, she thought: I am going to die, yet death is not supposed to happen this way. I am just 19 years old. I still have things to do, places to go, deadlines to meet, so I cannot be dead. I don’t have time to be dead. Still, I think I am. This must be death. Rays of brilliant white light flood me from all sides. Streams of light cocoon me, wrapping every part of my being in a chrysalis of soothing waves. Instead of the pain of impact, I feel rocked and held. This is bliss. No fear.

All of us fear death. For most of us, that fear remains below the surface of conscious awareness most of the time. What is fear if not the body’s reaction to the possibility of its own end? Eventually, you will die, so why does Nicole Kerr make the audacious claim that you are deathless?

In the book You Are Deathless, Nicole Kerr shares her journey about awakening to herself and the transforming work of aligning her soul, spirit, mind, and body. Through her own death, Nicole was forced to shed ascribed identities, such as being a people-pleaser, to instead develop an authentic, loving relationship with herself and God.

Her story proves that we can put to death the punishing, angry God that man created. This allows the beautiful God of love and acceptance whom she encountered in her own death to emerge and accompany us in day-to-day life.

Nicole beautifully presents how her NDE was actually an STE: a spiritually transformative experience. This aligns with the 10 most common NDE lessons (source: IANDS 2020 Annual Report), the first being that we do not die. Nicole has persevered through enormous suffering and pain to create the life she now loves.

Nicole has seen what awaits you at the end of this life because she's been there, and she can assure you that it’s a new beginning more beautiful than you can now comprehend. A good death begins today, and with it, a great life. Through Nicole's death experience, you can learn how to live your life to the fullest. You can engage in your own metamorphosis without having to die like Nicole did.

So much more than I expected...and affirmation!

I thought I was going to read a one-dimensional account of a person's experience of what it is like on the "other side." What I got was an amazing tale of a woman's journey through life which was forever changed one day while attending the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. What Nicole Angelique Kerr went through after suffering horrific injuries in a car wreck is comparable to the scenario of a SciFi TV show of about the same era..."We can rebuild her." Yeah, it was that bad. But "rebuilding" her was entirely a series of medical procedures and operations that continued for years, no bionic body parts involved.

But her physical suffering is only the beginning or her amazing story. As she proceeds through life readjusting her goals and learning to cope, she also must come to terms with her religious upbringing (which was extensive) and an emotional vacuum that took years to understand and resolve.

While all of the above is fascinating and compelling in unto itself, here's what makes YAD so damn good. Thanks to her well-rounded exposure to various Christian denominational teachings, her trials and tribulations in becoming a whole person again, AND her extensive education in heath, Ms. Kerr is uniquely qualified to relate and translate what happened during her near death experience.

Note: On a technical level, I understand why it is called a Near Death Experience. The person relating the experience is still alive. But the term isn't quite accurate to my thinking because, as in this case, Ms. Kerr was actually dead then came back to life. In fact, this happened to her several times. As a wordsmith, it seems to me something like "Once Dead Experience" would be more accurate. But I digress.

The best part of her story from my perspective, is that it affirms my belief in what God truly is and what it means to not be alive any more. As the author's description says, "Her story proves that we can put to death the punishing, angry God that man created. This allows the beautiful God of love and acceptance whom she encountered in her own death to emerge and accompany us in day-to-day life." Beyond that, her experience confirms my belief that God exists in everyone and probably every living thing. To fully understand how such knowledge can affect almost every aspect of your life, you need to read this book.

Final note: Audio book listeners will note that I gave "only" four stars for Performance. Do not let this deter you in any way, because my reasons are unique and specific. Having listened to hundreds of audio books and produced three of my own with VO talents, I could not, in respect to the professionals, give five stars. While production and sound quality are very professional, there are some long lags between some chapters and sections that sometimes have one wondering if the audio has stopped. This is easily overlooked once you know to expect them. Also, as one would expect, Ms. Kerr is not a professional Voice Over actress. But, in this case, that's not really a negative. Keeping in mind that this is a non-fiction, first person account, the fact that the narration is conducted by the author is a big plus. What we lose with not having a professional's delivery is more than compensated by the fact we get to hear the writer's experiences first hand. As the book progresses, the listener begins to know Ms. Kerr in a much more personal way than we would if her experience was delivered by an actress.

The bottom line is, this is an excellent true story that keeps you engaged the entire seven hours. More than that, it is a journey of discovery and insight led by a Sherpa who knows the way well.
