About this listen

Groucho Marx is your quizmaster and host to one of the funniest and most popular quiz shows from radio and television, You Bet Your Life! Enjoy 16 fun-filled comedy episodes from the long-running radio series!

Created by John Guedel, You Bet Your Life was one of the best-loved quiz shows to air on both radio and television. It was hosted by Groucho Marx of the Marx Brothers, with announcer and assistant George Fenneman. It debuted on radio in 1947 and lasted until 1960. For much of this time it was also seen on television. Contestant teams usually consisted of one male and one female, mostly selected from the studio audience. Groucho would engage in humorous conversations with the contestants and if they said the “secret word” (a common word revealed to the audience at the outset of each episode) a toy duck resembling Groucho - with eyeglasses and a mustache - descended from the ceiling to bring a $100 prize. After the conversations, the actual game began. Contestants were allowed to choose from a list of 20 available categories and try to answer a series of questions within the category to win additional money. At the end of the show, the contestants could play for a Jackpot question, risking half of their previous earnings in the hope of winning the Jackpot. Enjoy 16 hilarious comedy episodes of You Bet Your Life!

The original problem has been fixed

I was really excited for the arrival of volume four because my wife and I had just finished listening to the first three volumes. We ended up listening to them in reverse order, starting with volume three and finishing with volume one. As soon as we started listening to volume four we realized that we’d heard these episodes before. As it turns out, the content of volume four was identical to the content of volume three. I pointed this out to Audible customer service and they automatically returned the title and gave me a full refund. They did say that they would contact me when the error has been corrected and volume four contains different episodes from volume three. Once the problem is fixed I will buy it again.

UPDATE: After waiting about two weeks short of a whole year I finally got an update from Amazon. I realize that this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but they told me that the publisher told them that volume 4 is intentionally an exact duplicate of volume 3 and that because it’s a set of radio shows they can’t fix it. Of course they can fix it! All they have to do is remove the 16 duplicate episodes and replace them with 16 episodes that were not included in the first three volumes.

UPDATE 2: I contacted the publisher to address my concern about this release. He had no idea what I was talking about and assured me that that was the first time hearing about the problem and that nobody from Audible had ever contacted him about my complaint. He promised to look into it and get back to me. Well, on a whim I decided to try and repurchase volume 4 to check and see if it was still a repeat of volume 3. The first thing I noticed was that volume 4 was now four minutes shorter than volume 3 and when I started listening it was now something different than it was a year ago. So I have updated my review accordingly.

ENDLESS FUN!!

Great old time radio listening hosted by one of America’s iconic funny man, Groucho Marx. I could listen to these shows over and over again, and I do! Always great for a good laugh and mood enhancer. One of my absolute favorite old time radio programs. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore, they just don’t….☺️
