About this listen
The ultimate insider's look at the newest titans of tech, from the editorial team at Forbes.
Silicon Valley's new billionaires are an unconventional breed, turning ideas into money at a rate never before seen in human history. Their ascension proves a turning point in how great fortunes are made and how technology disseminates.
Among these golden boys are: Elon Musk, billionaire bachelor and founder of Paypal, electric carmaker Tesla, and private space company Space X; Evan Spiegel, 23-year-old founder of Snapchat, who recently turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook; and Alex Karp, the eccentric philosopher with almost no tech background who turned Palantir into a data-mining champion. Over the last three years, Forbes has published in depth profiles of this new batch of billionaires, including the founders of Spotify, Dropbox, Tumblr, and Twitter. Now, in a compilation introduced and updated by Forbes editor Randall Lane, fans and critics alike will get a comprehensive look at who these super-entrepreneurs are and what they say about their own success and their plans for the future.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Was this hubris, or genius? In How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars, tech journalist Billy Gallagher takes us inside the rise of one of Silicon Valley's hottest start-ups. Snapchat began as a late-night dorm room revelation, the brainchild of Stanford English major Reggie Brown who was nursing regrets about photos he had sent.

Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

Alibaba, now the world's largest ecommerce company, mostly escaped Western notice for over 10 years, while building a customer base larger than Amazon's and handling the bulk of ecommerce transactions in China. How did it happen? And what was it like to be along for such a revolutionary ride?

But in the midst of it all, a quieter revolution has begun to emerge, one that might ultimately do more to change the face of the region: Entrepreneurship.

When scholars write the history of the world twenty years from now, what will they say was the most crucial development in the first few years of the twenty-first century? The attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11 and the Iraq war? Or the convergence of technology and events that allowed India, China, and so many other countries to become part of the global supply chain for services and manufacturing, creating an explosion of wealth in the middle classes of the world's two biggest nations?

Sumner Murray Redstone, once feared as the “mad genius” of media who would dump his CEOs for mere wobbles in his companies’ stock price, had built one of the world’s greatest media empires through a series of audacious takeovers constructed to ensure that he always maintained control. Today he controls 80 percent of the voting shares of both Viacom and CBS, meaning that on a whim he could replace the entire boards of two public companies with a combined value of $40 billion.

How will it fit into a life that makes you and your family happy? How will it change the world? Eventually Mark found his great idea: coconut water. He had seen the developing world use coconut water, but this valuable resource was being discarded in the US. While taking on the beverage industry was a big goal - high-hanging fruit - it was worth the risk.

Very decent story
The story is very decent but not a surprise after seeing the contents. It is just an exploration of the founders. Many short stories, so no in-depth insights, no exclusive information from interviews. But that is ok as expected.
Meanwhile, the performance has room to improve. It should be louder and a little slower so I could listen more comfortably while driving.

True stories are the most motivating.
It's nice hearing stories about real people working hard in their gifted areas. I am super motivated after listening and plan on listening to this at least a couple times per year. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for their vocation.

I love this book
High school and college kids making billions of dollars and going from rags to riches. A perfect example is the guy who used to collect food stamps after his parents died when he was a kid: He signed a deal that made him a multi-billionaire in front of the welfare office where he used to get food stamps.
These kids think differently. Their products are different. And, they are being hugely rewarded.
I highly recommend this book!

Case histories of successful entrepreneurs
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. The book provides insight into the world of start-up entrepreneurs and how billions are spent in this world.
If you’ve listened to books by Randall Lane before, how does this one compare?
It's my first Randall Lane book and it is mostly a compilation of magazine article profiles with no overarching themes or analysis.
What three words best describe Walter Dixon’s performance?
Sharp, transparent, flowing
Was You Only Have to Be Right Once worth the listening time?
For me yes, but if not interested in the individual stories you could easily skip around as the profiles are independent and free-standing.

What about today?
Any additional comments?
This book was inspiring and awesome... but... It said nothing of where those people are today - Censorship, Estabishment, Power - was this the end goal in mind? Because that is where Facebook and Twitter is at right now. I doubt it was where they wanted to go, but with power and money come... Those with more power and money, and sellouts and corruption happen.
