About this listen

The purpose of this book is to provide an average computer user with the knowledge that will help them stay safe while online, as well as help them make privacy choices that work for them. My goal is to explain online threats in terms that don't require a technical background to understand. All techno-speak will be limited, and where it cannot be avoided, I will first explain them in common, non-technical terms.

This book should be accessible to anyone with enough computer knowledge to use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, do some online shopping, use Google to search for cat videos, pay your bills online, and do all the important stuff. If you are comfortable doing those things, you are in the core demographic for this book.

While this book was designed with a US consumer in mind, it will be equally applicable all over the world. There may be an occasional inside joke that folks outside the USA won't understand, but that shouldn't detract anything from the book.

What is different about this book is that I'm targeting non-technical folks, and I'm explaining the issues and the threats without resorting to scare tactics or threats which seem so prevalent in today's security training.

Something called FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) is very prevalent in today's information security space. I'm avoiding all FUD in this book.

If I were to summarize this book in a few short bullet points, it would be like this:

  • Don't click on links or attachments in strange, unexpected emails.
  • Don't share your password - like ever.
  • Do use a password manager for all your passwords.
  • Do use long, unpredictable, and unique passwords for every site.
  • Do use critical thinking skills and don't be swayed by emotions.

Good, solid information for anyone who gets online

I would recommend this book to anyone who gets online. It's practical information to help keep you safer online and it's put out there in a way that's easily understood. You don't have to be super-knowledgeable about computers to understand this information. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Make Online Security a Priority

Siggi Bjarnason's book details online threat assessment and how to combat the threats. She explains there is no 100% security measure, but you can make it much more difficult for criminals to breach your computer and its online presence. She lays out what vulnerabilities you may have and how you can solve them in language even low-tech me could understand. There are a great number of tips that I'm anxious to implement. A very good IT security listen.

Becky White did a great job with narration of this book. The tone set just the right feel to this educational listen.

Well read, well written

Coming from a more advanced area in terms of computer security, I figured it would be good to give this an overview, see if it was worth recommending to those people that ask, or are too afraid to ask, for help in daily computer usage.
As an audiobook, of course, I should note that the narration was good. Even without looking at the PDF in question, I was able to get a good general overview of the situation. The speaking was at a good rate of speed, I was not thrown off by any pronunciation. Well done.

As for the rest of the book, it is a good basic to middling primer on security. Nothing too advanced, and anything that is too technical is broken down for less advanced listeners. I can honestly say that I would recommend it for anyone and everyone to listen, so long as they are using any internet connected technology.

I requested a free review copy of this audiobook, with expectation of my honest review. Thank you for allowing me to listen to and review the book!
