Publisher's summary
When Red, a young boy living on a vast country estate owned by his father, a world-renowned industrialist, finds and captures two small and strange-looking animals, he hides them away in an old bird cage in the loft of his father's barn. He has dreams of making big bucks in a circus sideshow featuring the two unusual creatures. Red shares his secret find with his new friend, Slim, an astronomer's son who is visiting the estate with his father and who has second thoughts about helping Red keep the animals in captivity.
The boys' fathers are meeting to discuss the possibility that telepathic visitors from another galaxy will be landing at the estate to begin trade negotiations between their two planets. The industrialist's and astronomer's society is facing a postapocalyptic future where nothing is hoped for, and the youth of the future will inherit little but the certainty of death. The visitors are traveling from a world where the atom has been harnessed for society's benefit.
The secret Red and Slim are hiding in the cage may change everything for their planet...if only the boys have the courage to tell the truth.
Will the innocence of youth unlock the secret to a future of hope and prosperity? Isaac Asimov's exciting 1952 short story leaves us hanging with the animals in the cage.

When the technology for twisting to other probability patterns was developed, a grateful Earth solved its overcrowding by sending people to live on Earths where plants and animals never got started. Each family could have its own planet, because there was an infinite number of such alt-Earths available, and the computers never assigned the same one twice. Story
A research spaceship from Earth lands on Saybrook's Planet to investigate a report by an earlier colony ship. The colony ship's captain, Saybrook, had reported that the planet's abundant plant and animal life was all part of a single organism with a unified consciousness. That organism was able to induce pregnancy in all the colony ship's female animals, and all the offspring born had green patches of fur instead of eyes, a sign that they were part of the planetary organism.

Story
What would a child of the future envision a classroom of the 20th century to look like? This is a question that is explored in a rare piece of science fiction from master writer Isaac Asimov. Listen in to two children of the 22nd century as they explore their first-ever book. Everything they know comes on a screen and they're not sure what to do with a book. While written decades ago it's uncanny to hear the similarities to our present.

Story
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Story
Untouched by Human Hands consists of 13 stories of beings who dwell on the strange borders of reality. Some of these stories tell of people you know or of events that might happen - but haven't yet. Some will take you to the furthermost reaches of the sky and to planets whose names are unknown this side of Arcturus. And some - perhaps the richest and most memorable of these stories - open into the interior of strange minds to reveal the reflection of ourselves.

Story
In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection.

Story
Cities were crushed by the falling spacecraft, but one ship didn't crash. It remained intact and disgorged hordes of alien soldiers determined to fight to the death. The abandoned vessels also contained a wealth of advanced technology. Led by David Levinson, the greatest minds of our world developed deadly new hybrid weapons. Bases were built on the moon, Mars, and beyond. A new generation of defenders had to be trained, for the invaders would return.
