【解説】吉行淳之介の初期の短編で、芥川賞受賞作。
　山村英夫は会社員で3年目。女性を愛する煩わしさから、娼婦街での交渉で済ませている。女性との関わりは遊戯の段階に留めておくのが精神の平衡にいいと考えている。ある日、好ましい印象の道子の部屋に上り一夜を過ごした。彼女は、しとやかで知的な風貌を持っていた。数週間後、待ち合わせの喫茶室に向う自分に「ときめき」の感情があることに驚いた。そして、「今度お会いするまで、わたし、操を守っておく」という道子の言葉が心に刻み込まれ、それから何回も通うことになった。やがて、山村の心の裡に、道子を占有できないことへの嫉妬が鮮明になっていく・・・。底本は、昭和60年発行の新潮文庫です（現在のものと多少異なる部分があります。）。（C）2016　響林社 Contemporary Fiction Genre Fiction
