Irish immigration to the United States in the 1800's increased dramatically after the great potato famine.  Immigrants weren't treated kindly and Irish immigrants were treated even worse.  The increased immigration  to the United States produced a political group known as the Nativist.

In 1565 Pedro Menedez de Aviles claimed a small piece of land for Spain and named it St. Augustine.  This parcel of land became the longest inhabited colony in America.  Over 400 years and St. Augustine is still a thriving city and now a historic tourist attraction. 

In 1756 Olaudah Equiano was kidnapped from his own yard along with his sister. He was bound and gagged and forced to hike miles and miles until they reached the slave ships waiting in port on the Atlantic Ocean for them. From there he was taken to Virginia where he was sold to a British Naval officer. Eventually, he learned to read and write and speak English. AFter he bought his own freedom he wrote his autobiography.
