تأسست كنيسة سميرنا بينما كان بولس يخدم كنيسة أفسس. بحسب الفقرة السابقة، إن أعضاء هذه الكنيسة كانوا فقراء، و الذين بسبب إيمانهم، قاومهم اليهود في مجتمعهم. وعن كيف اضطهدت هذه الكنيسة بواسطة اليهود، هذا يمكن أن نراه في استشهاد بوليكاربوس، الاسقف في عصر آباء الكنيسة. إن قديسي الكنيسة الأولين واجهوا اضطهاد ثابت من المؤمنين اليهود الذين رفضوا المسيح كالمسيا الخاص بهم.
