248: Sensory Processing Difficulties in Kids

  • Summary

  • Does your kid experience MEGA meltdowns? Do their emotions seem all over the place - Up one minute down the next? Do they seem more sensitive to things? Lights are too bright, music too loud, smells too strong, tags annoying, sock seams send them crying to their room just as you're trying to get out the door? This can be a sign of SPD or sensory processing difficulties.

Or perhaps they are sensory seeking and they are very rough, they touch everything trailing their hand behind them as they walk, they climb on every piece of furniture, they're loud and intense! They may even eat things that aren't food on purpose!

In this 2 part series we learn what our 8 main senses are and how signals can be interrupted and therefore cause difficulties in the way our childrens perceive and interact with their environment. We can learn ways to help support our little ones when they find their surroundings overwhelming or when they are seeking out stimuli. This is an area that is not widely spoken about but I am passionate to bring our attention to it as there is much we can do to mitigate the effects and help support those healthy neural pathways develop! Early intervention is key!
