و إذا توجب علينا الإيمان بيسوع، فيَجِبُ أَنْ نَفْهمَ قصد الله من إعطاءه هذه الفريضة بالختان لنا. و الختان هو قطع قلفةِ الرجلِ. فلماذا طلب الله من إبراهيم و نسله أن يختتنوا؟ السّبب هو أنه قَدْ وَعدَ بأنّ فقط الذين "انفصلوا" عن خطاياهم سيصيرون شعبه .
