在旧约圣经中有一个大祭司名叫麦基洗德。在亚伯拉罕时代,基大老玛和所有与他同盟的王都掳掠了所多玛和蛾摩拉所有的财产。亚伯拉罕率领在他家族里出生且训练有素的仆人了上了战场,与基大老玛及其联盟战斗。
在那里亚伯拉罕击败他即以拦王基大老玛和所有与他同盟的王,带回他的侄子罗得和财产。在亚伯拉罕击败敌人基大老玛返回后,撒冷王麦基洗德和至高神的祭司拿出饼和酒为亚伯拉罕祝福。亚伯拉罕就把所得的拿出十分之一给了麦基洗德(创世记14)。
