74. Save your Voice With These Strategies

  • Summary

  • This year, we are taking part in Podcasthon, the global charity podcast event! This week’s episode is dedicated to Street Smart, a charity that believes no one should be without a safe and secure place to call home.

Ever feel like you’re losing your voice trying to get your students' attention? We have been there! This week we are sharing ways to get your students attention while saving your voice.

Non-verbal Strategies for Capturing Students' Attention:

    • Utilising Instruments: Introducing instruments like bells and tambourines can serve as signals, prompting students to focus without verbal prompts.
    • Implementing Clapping and Action Patterns: Rhythmic clapping sequences and simple action patterns (e.g., tapping the head followed by a clap) can engage students physically and mentally, fostering better attention.
    • Employing Visual Cues: Strategies such as flicking the lights or displaying visual signals on smartboards are another way to non-verbally cue students to refocus.
    • Incorporating Music and Technology: Playing short, recognisable music clips or using technological tools to signal transitions and capture your students attention.

Next Steps for Teachers After Listening:

    • Select and implement non-verbal cues that align with your teaching style
    • Introduce and practise with students
    • Maintain consistency

Get ready to take control of your classroom without losing your voice in the process.

    Rainbows ahead,

    Alisha and Ashleigh
