Well, according to my research, The essential difference between a "daemon" and a "demon" is that a daemon is any spirit, good or bad, including the spirit of a living human, while a demon is exclusively a bad spirit. A daemon can also be controlled if you know the daemon’s name which according to other folklore is also applicable to demons. But hey, it's homebrew so I’m sure the DM in this case provided more background.

Honestly…it sounds like the DM did exactly what the players wanted him to do. And I absolutely love the twist about needing to die to find the other relic. From my perspective it doesn’t look like the DM did anything wrong.
