About this listen

American ISIS is an eight-episode podcast that tells the remarkable story of Russell Dennison, an American ex-convict and Muslim convert who joined the Islamic State in Syria. As US and coalition airstrikes rained down on ISIS fighters in 2018 and 2019, Dennison secretly recorded dozens of hours of audio about his past and his life with ISIS and sent them to journalist Trevor Aaronson with one condition: Nothing he said could be revealed until he was captured or - more likely - killed.©2021 First Look Institute, Inc. This top-notch audio documentary offers a truly unique insight into why an American raised Catholic would join ISIS. It also offers a fascinating look at how a tough, resourceful and fair-minded investigative reporter sought to verify each piece of the story. You can disagree with everything Russell Dennison ever did or said and still be glad to learn insights into the motivations and methods that remain alive today. It was so compelling I lengthened my daily exercises so I could listen to the next chapter.

This is an important story for those who wish to understand another side of the "war on terror". It will interest historians, humanitarian, law enforcement, military, and regular people trying to make sense of our times.

Fascinating story of an American true-believer who was radicalized (with an assist from the U.S. justice system) and travelled to Syria to join and live in the Islamic State. Great podcast series!

Extraordinary story, well told

The idea of an American joining ISIS and adopting this mindset shows how certain people at certain times in their lives can be situationally vulnerable to religious dogma. In this case, the subject was a socially marginalized “loser” who, as he got older, wanted to find meaning and purpose in his life. The author handles the story with good journalistic balance.

Enlightening

Very interesting story. Let’s not forget that russel Denison was shooting at Americans who were there to protect the rights of Innocent people. Russel Denison chose to be a terrorist Which was no different than the individuals who flew the into the twin towers.
