About this listen

Jeff Pearlman is a critically-acclaimed sportswriter, with bestselling books about the Mets and the Lakers to his credit, but some ten years ago he found himself out of his element when he came face to face with a murderer. That’s where this insane true crime story begins.

Apartment 515 is a podcast exploring how Pearlman first encountered a part-time professional backgammon player named Rod Covlin while both men were waiting to pick up their young children from preschool inside a Jewish Community Center in the upscale suburb of Scarsdale, New York. Pearlman thought of Covlin as "Mr. Balloon Animals" - the single dad whose special talent was tying balloons into funny shapes for the kids. It was then that Pearlman heard a story - one that was just rumor at the time - about Covlin allegedly committing a shocking crime.

Pearlman would spend the next decade, off and on, investigating the case, tracking down witnesses, running down leads, and ultimately confronting a murderer in prison about his victim. By turns surprising, emotional, and thrilling, Apartment 515 takes twists and turns listeners won’t see coming. It’s the kind of tale that makes you wonder: how many of your friends, family members and neighbors are wearing a disguise? How far will they go to hide their true face? And what lengths are you prepared to go to uncover who they really are?

It’s not the kind of story that one can actually “enjoy.” But it is worth listening to.

It’s well-written, mostly well-narrated, and has a good pace. The reason I give only four stars for “Performance” and “Overall,” is because at times the audio is a little uneven. Voice recordings are played, but are not the best quality and not adjusted up so that the listener can have the benefit of hearing what’s said easily. I needed to rewind a few times and turn the volume up for some of those recordings.

Overall, though, I highly recommend this pod.

Such a Sad Story

This was interesting enough. It's not the most engaging podcast , but it's alright. It's good to remember these types of psychopaths are out there.

Great job by Jeff Pearlman a consummate journalist. He did tremendous job researching and telling the story. Kudos for going to the prison to see Colvin unannounced

This podcast was quite well done with the exception of one small detail: Novi, Michigan is pronounced Nov-eye not Nov-ee.
This is the same for the hotel in Novi, Michigan. This reminded me of the mispronunciations of the GPS which could be where the author got it from.

Very well done

I could not stop listening. The story is so haunting because it is true.

Riveting and Haunting

The audio clips were very hard to understand as were the instances when the narrator was talking candidly with someone else. But overall, good book.

Good True Crime Story

Wow! What a story. I was glued from beginning to end. This is OMG.! Amazing ! I immediately began hypothesizing
about why this woman would marry this man - and I kept spinning new theories throughout thanks to the author's skillful planting and interviews of family members and various others. What a tautly woven, intricate story. The writing was completely and utterly engaging. I didn’t want to stop listening and finished at 4 am. If you love psychological thrillers like I do, you won’t want to pass this one up.

Be prepared to be glued to your headphones!
