Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

By: Armchair Umbrella
  • Summary

  • Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

  • Rebecca Lemov (on brainwashing)
    Apr 9 2025

Rebecca Lemov (The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-Persuasion) is a historian of science, author, and associate professor at Harvard. Rebecca joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the meet cute with her husband at the cafe where she was struggling to write her dissertation, how she fell under a romantic spell with anthropology as well as opioids, and the relationship between addiction and brainwashing. Rebecca and Dax talk about how Patty Hearst used brainwashing as a defense for her actions, why it's such an effective mind control tactic to strip someone of their name, and how Korean War soldiers’ health and wellness bounce back after trauma hid evidence of their suffering. Rebecca explains the normalization of brutal torture training of troops, that cult leaders intuitively act out a guidebook of hierarchical dynamics of desire and power, and Facebook’s experiment on emotional contagion as an example of soft brainwashing.

  • Dove Cameron
    Apr 7 2025

Dove Cameron (Too Much, Descendants, Liv and Maddie) is an Emmy Award-winning actor and singer. Dove joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the origins of bloomers, realizing she was a stimulus addict at a very young age, and her fear of offending the gooey duck community. Dove and Dax talk about spending her formative years in India for months at a time, her first music gig singing in the children’s ghost choir for Ryan Gosling’s Halloween band, and recognizing as early as she can remember that her parents were meant to split. Dove explains not knowing she was an introvert until she was thrust into the public eye, growing up on TV while processing her father’s death, and how helpful it would be if we all demystified our mental health.

The interview she does

I don't dislike this show at all. he seem to ask all the questions. I want to ask about a personality that I'm interested in. I definitely will be. Listening to more episodes. . I especially like the episode of Jeff Bridges. Keep up the good work Dax. Love your car movie. You shouldn't be allowed to own those cool cars.

BRILLIANT and Funny!

SO HAPPY AE is now available here! Such a a fun podcast. Entertaining AND can be educational. Dax and Monica have open minds and seem to like learning new things about how and why people do what they do. Their relationship is serious and sweet. I've been listening to this podcast from day one and have even gone to one of their first in person shows. Highly recommend!

Anonymous Armcherries

The brave souls who bare all while hiding in closets telling their stories have been the highlight of my listening. I fell upon this podcast traveling 14 hours by car and laughed the whole way! Zac and Monica are my new favorite interviewers.

Anonymous episodes are worth listening to

The call in anonymous guests with their prompted stories are usually really good. The expert guests are usually interesting and somewhat helpful. The rest is out of touch celebrity echo chamber.
